I know that by now almost everyone has seen the movie. After having heard and read all of the commentaries from every conceivable prospective - - I have finally had the experience of watching the film myself - - on DVD at home.
Mel Gibson is to be commended for producing this important piece of the total Jesus epic.
We Christians often want to fast forward through this part of the story of the life and times of Jesus - - because we know that Sunday's coming!
It is important to our faith journey, to stop and see just how humankind can attempt to destroy the Divine Love that God sent down to us.
We are still at it today. We still crucify the Christ sent to us every day by how we treat those whom God loves.
We are still no better than the crowds before Pilate who demanded execution of someone who went up against the "established religion" of the day.
Yes, given the opportunity, we would do it all over again. We would free Barabbas and execute Jesus!
How can you try to kill Divine Love?
We have seen it in Iraq, we have seen it in Afghanistan, we have seen it in Russia, we have seen it in New York City, Washington DC, and other places around the world where hatred and intolerance seems to rule the day.
Millions of dollars were spent on security alone at the recently completed national political conventions.
Because of hatred - - our beloved nation will never regain its "footing" again. We will continue to react to acts of violence and hatred - - never knowing where they will break out next.
The gruesome scenes of Jesus being scourged and beaten portrayed by Mel Gibson pale in comparison to what hatred in our day has poured out upon the innocents of our world.
Yes Sunday is coming - - but for some not soon enough!
