The communication and news media have been filled with reports on "the controversy" surrounding the Ash Wednesday (Feb 25, 2004) release of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ". Jody Dean, a Dallas CBS News Anchor wrote this -- "The film grabs you in the first five seconds, and never lets go. The brutality, humiliation, and gore is almost inconceivable -- and still probably doesn't go far enough. The scourging alone seems to never end, and you cringe at the sound and splatter of every blow - no matter how steely your nerves. Even those who have known combat or prison will have trouble, no matter their experience - because this Man was not conscripted. He went willingly, laying down His entirety for all. It is one thing for a soldier to die for his countrymen. It's something else entirely to think of even a common man dying for those who hate and wish to kill him. But this is no common man. He is the King of the Universe." Some of our churches have bought out entire performances at some of the Little Rock theatres for their youth groups. It will be shown on all of the screens in some multi-screen theatres. Many of our youth groups will be going to see "The Passion of the Christ". We have a lot of youth leaders that think that this is "just another movie". It might be well for youth leaders to warn of the graphic violence, especially surrounding the scourge and crucifixion of Jesus. The "R" rating of this film, is solely for the violence depicted. A reading of the Gospel's account might be very helpful prior to going. Also remind youth of the culpability of all humankind (Jews, Gentiles, Greeks, Romans, Politicians, etc.) in the trial and execution of Jesus. I would strongly suggest a post-viewing discussion by the youth group of the film (immediately following the film, if at all possible). Give the youth an opportunity to respond (be ready for some raw emotions). Some may be led to a new commitment of their spiritual journey -- spiritual leaders be ready to respond. So what is all "the controversy" about? -- Jesus Christ has been a controversy from the beginning of his ministry. He proclaimed and modeled a new covenant that brought him to a cross at Golgotha. Mel Gibson is a very devout practicing Catholic Christian. This is a highly talented true believer attempting to portray that scene using the Gospels as his text. Anti-Defamation groups are arguing that viewing this film will lead to anti-Jewish hatred in this country. Christians know that this behavior is totally wrong-headed and non-Christian. It was self-serving political leaders and mob rule that killed Jesus. All of us, from Adam and Eve onward are culpable. It was and is our sins that drove those nails into the body of Jesus. God chose to save us by sending Jesus. How cool is that!?! Do not be put off by the "blame game". You go see the movie and make up your own mind. Do not let the critics and pundits ruin it for you -- Warning - prepare to have your life changed forever!
