"A Horse is a Horse, of Course of Course ..." Just imagine it . . . as you steer the steed into the acceleration lane you spur him to get up to speed as you merge in with the other steeds. Horsepower of all colors and markings, big and small, some fast, some slow. Some with flowing manes some with stubby tails. |

The Bethlehem Star The Sunday before Christmas our Sunday School lesson was about Matthew's Christmas Star and the Magi. I told the class that, in my opinion, God placed that star into being at creation and timed it to appear as it did and as it was described. Maybe, as they say, I should not have "gone there" - - because then one curious student queried the class and me - - "Whatever happened to the Bethlehem star?"...

Now there are Nine -- What Will We Call Them? Surely you have seen the new nine district map by now. We know where the boundaries are? But what shall we call them? What would like the name of your district to be?... |

What I learned about life from EECP Her name is Carrie, a dedicated health professional if there is ever was one! Carrie is a loving and caring Christian nurse. Carrie is the Angel that God sent into my life. You see she had to have me strapped down with Velcro©, where I could not move to get my full attention.... |

A Story of An Old Fire Horse A story is told of a large draft horse that worked at the firehouse for years. When the fire bell rang he was ready to run with the fire wagon. When it rang they had better hang on quick because he was outta there on his way to the fire... |

A Response to the Confessing Movement in Arkansas Do not be misled and swayed by inflammatory rhetoric and scare tactics. Those are the tactics of desperate people. Do be led by your heart and mind and elect a delegation that is fully representative of fine folks who file into a United Methodist Church every Sunday come rain or shine, cold or hot. Our Lord did not draw lines in the sand - - he erased them! |

What I Believe About -- Redistricting 9, 8, 7, 6...Which is Just Enough?... |

The Stinking Thinking of the Pontifical Pontifications I am writing this commentary on the Sabbath before Easter morning. Jesus did not die on a rude cross at the town dump of Jerusalem for “The Church” – He was the perfect sacrificial lamb for the sins of all humankind. He died for all. Even the head of the Roman Catholic church does have authority to deny anyone access the Lord’s table! Those are indeed “dark clouds”!... |

God's War No I am not hanging this war on God! I am saying that throughout history that God has used man made events to bring about Divine Will. We got ourselves into this war but God has used it to free the Iraqi people... |

Twisting in the Wind Since we already have a Bishop of the United Methodist Church with a long rap sheet, why not let him become our Bishop Designee for any cause in which you need a Bishop of the church to be arrested. Just think of the prestige that would add to your cause!... |

Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing If making disciples is our mission why are we fighting over trivials so much and making sure that everyone and everything is "politically correct" before we can sign off on it. We have far too many "monitoring" agencies and not near enough "discipling" agencies in The United Methodist Church. Enough of the “correctness police” already!... Confronted by a National Crisis -- A War With Iraq What is worth dying for? Is this war we are about to prosecute with Iraq worth that kind of price? Will replacing the Saddam regime, with a free democratic government, bring stability to that area of the world? Does Iraq, in fact, have hidden weapons of mass destruction that they will, without provocation, unleash on their neighbors...... |

Do This in Remembrance of Me We all know this story. Out of the Jewish Seder meal that is a part of the Passover celebration, Jesus began and instituted this gracious act of love that virtually every Christian group celebrates in some way. It had such a simple beginning. Taking the elements of the Seder, Jesus asked us to use the wine to remember that his blood was shed for all and he asked us to use the unleavened bread to remember that his body was broken and sacrificed for all. Such a simple and loving act of grace...... |

A Covenant Community of Faith Any "pastor-in-charge" worth their salt tries everything in their bag of tricks to keep the promises all of us made before the church concerning prayers, presence, gifts and service ever before us... |

Sexual Misbehavior Marital infidelity among the clergy is always bad and sad news across the church. All of the church suffers when we read or hear about "the preacher who ran off with someone in the church." All clergy suffer when this happens. This is not a completely new phenomenon - - it just seems to have reached a new level in recent years. Some would even say an epidemic level... |

Salty People Lay Speakers are salty people. United Methodist Lay Speakers add a richness of flavor and stability to the witness for Jesus Christ throughout the entire United Methodist Church... |

Baptism and Holy Communion Almost from the beginning "the church" began to "tweak" this act of God's grace and slowly but surely took it completely away from God and it has by and large become "property of the church."... |

Is There No Balm in Gilead? With our houses of government almost equally divided and the narrowness of the margins of the Presidential election maybe, just maybe, our elected leaders will find the high ground of consensus - - without the tired old images of political rancor and "paying back"... |

Ain't Worth a Bucket of Warm Spit We expend a lot of our energy and emotional bank account assets with each other on Resolutions that when all the words are said and the votes taken won’t amount to - - “. . a Bucket of Warm Spit”... |

Where Have all the Bishops Gone? A new phenomena has arisen across our covenant denomination during the last three quadrennia. It goes something like this - - "General Conference you might have spoken - - but you did not speak for me, and I am not going to abide by your policy and doctrine and I am going to do everything I can to disobey that covenant and to demonstrate my opposition. . . . . . . . |

To Clone or Not to Clone? Much is in the news these days about medical experimentation in human cloning. Kinda scary - is it not?!... |

Where Have All The Statesmen Gone? Ed Bellow of Frisco, Texas, asks that haunting question in a letter to the editor published in the August 29th, 2002 issue of The Dallas Morning News. Mr. Bellow make the following point, “To me, the gumption to vote one’s mind on issues takes precedence over any stated position they may make because a position taken by those who only vote along party lines is only good as long as the party agrees”.... |

Roast Preacher for Lunch And then, if some folk are having “roast preacher” for Sunday lunch as often they eat fried chicken or if other people are trying to hold the church hostage for money or if people are being disrespectful, or if your church has a revolving door of pastors, it is up to laity to hold laity accountable for their behavior... |

Is Osama bin Laden Satan? What do you think? Do you believe that God, the same God who sent love to us in the form of Jesus the Christ, would intentionally kill innocent people to "get our attention"... |

Another of Momma's Sayings My Momma had a “saying” for every occasion. When someone was really doing well, she would say that they “had the world by the tail with a down hill pull”... |

An Ode to Old Geezers What we are craving for, and want more than honor, is to be "listened to." As did Rodney Dangerfield, we just want a "little respect." We want someone to just "look us in the eye" and give us an honest handshake (or a fast high five) and really listen to us!... |

Going Back! Windows Millennium Edition has a wonderful feature. If your computer completely goes haywire there is a feature where you can restore it back to a date when it was working correctly! If you had that kind of option would you want to restore the world to September 10, 2001? |

Holy Wars After all of our HOLY WARS all that are left over are dead bodies of those that God loves - - no winners, just dead bodies!... |
